39.7% – New European Record Efficiency for Solar Cells achieved by Fraunhofer ISE
FULLSPECTRUM -
A new PV wave making more efficient use of the solar spectrum
FULLSPECTRUM is a
scientific project funded by the European Commission. The project
started in November 2003 and will last five years. As an Integrated
Project (IP) it is part of the 6
th Framework Programme of the European
Commission.
The overall goal of this Integrated Project (IP) is the better
exploitation of the solar spectrum in the photovoltaic (PV) conversion
of the solar energy. The conventional —single
semiconductor— solar cells only convert the photons of energy
close to the semiconductor bandgap effectively. Photons with less
energy are not absorbed and their energy is totally wasted. Photons
with too high energy only use a fraction of it.
To overcome this fundamental drawback, this IP has selected four
scientific-technological paths with prospects for accomplishing better
exploitation of the solar spectrum and with the potential of eventually
being accepted as commercial, large diffusion products with the overall
aim of providing superior alternatives to the today’s energy
technologies.
